"Battle Ground Park", a 12" x 16" Oil on Board paint was started on site during late afternoon and was finished in the studio. This is not a "pure" plein air painting but considered a hybrid by many artists. A point of light in a painting often can pull an otherwise luke warm view together. This was one of those paintings. Painting oil on board has a property in which the color does not sink into the surface such as it would on a stretched canvas. This seems to allow additional color bounce when placing the highlights. Not rocket science but seems to work for me.
Born in Philadelphia in the late thirties, Jim Gola grew up heavily influenced by art and the cultural atmosphere contained in this bustling city. The city of brotherly love is still a thriving east coast art market that comprises some of the oldest art schools and galleries in America. Jim admits to spending numerous hours at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art as a youngster. Admiring much of the work of Americas past masters such as Inness, Moran, Chase, Homer and Bierstadt, among others. He then started to generate his lifelong love of oil painting.
