This historic registered grist mill is located just north of Woodland, Washington. This painting was started en plein air during the month of November a number of years ago. The painting was executed on 3/16 inch Masonite, triple primed with Gesso. Due to the complexity of the subject, I sketched in the basic shapes in pencil on the board to save time. Even then, it was still almost too cold to paint on this day and after two hours; my painter friends and I packed up and headed for warmer shores. This was a challenging scene to paint due to the mixture of textures and colors.

Born in Philadelphia in the late thirties, Jim Gola grew up heavily influenced by art and the cultural atmosphere contained in this bustling city. The city of brotherly love is still a thriving east coast art market that comprises some of the oldest art schools and galleries in America. Jim admits to spending numerous hours at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art as a youngster. Admiring much of the work of Americas past masters such as Inness, Moran, Chase, Homer and Bierstadt, among others. He then started to generate his lifelong love of oil painting.
